Hammer paint (or hammered paint) is a special finish with a surface that looks like hammered metal when dried. It is also known as hammertone. The slightly iridescent areas are caused by the different orientation of very small shiny aluminium particles which are suspended in the paint. To make the "hammered" effect more pronounced, a small percentage of silicone oil is added during manufacture.

Hammer paint is often used to beautify technical apparatus as the optical advantage of hammer paint is that surfaces look acceptable even if the underlying surface is not flat and smooth. To get a regular paint to look smooth the surface would have to be prepared first, for example by filling, sanding, grinding or polishing. With hammer paint, this step can often be omitted.

Technical note:- If you wish to use a primer this finish is only compatible with etch primer, do not use this product to overcoat on top of any Paragon primer or undercoat products other than the Paragon etch primers. Our hammer finish is a mild pattern – this is intentional. The method of application can affect the development of the pattern, aerosols tend to smooth it out the most, followed by brush application, and spray gun gives the most hammered effect.

A great colour range of hammered finish paints, in fact the best range out there. The finish is also top drawer.

I spray about 250 small parts every year and need to find a new source for Hammer finish paint because the previous supplier ceased.

This paint is not quite like other Hammer finish I've used. Usually it seems to be a mixture of two slightly different shades that then separate a bit to make the hammer effect

It's quite hard with this to get an even effect with this because it needs to be sprayed very evenly.

But this paint seems to just be all one shade and the hammer effect comes from using two different solvents, I would guess.

I have to spray vertical surfaces to be economic and this makes runs more likely

Advantages: I got an even effect on the first try with this paint.

I had no problem with runs on my first try. The solvent seemed to go very quickly and this stablised the paint.

I sprayed three coats leaving each to just get tacky. This built up quite nicely.

I'm looking for a copy of a well known colour because I am restoring parts. This turned out well.

I say this stuff is easy to use compared to others I've tried

Disadvantages: I got "hammer" effect but it's not quite so pretty as other paint I've used. Very even colouring, just a bit boring.

The nozzle makes quite a big fan compared to other stuff I've used. Not ideal for me because my parts are about the size of your fist. Be fine on a bigger area.
